Dublin's best spots for photoshoots Part 2 - The Dublin Castle

Being originally from the Philippines I did not see a lot of castles growing up. Here in Ireland though, Castles are everywhere. In Dublin alone there are at least 10 you can readily visit.

The closest one in the City Centre is the Dublin Castle. Very conveniently located along Dame street. It is just a short walk away from Temple Bar, Ha'penny Bridge and Trinity College.

I love going to the Castle for shoots. With the beautiful garden and the gorgeous castle in your background what more can you ask for.

While at the Castle I suggest you also visit the excellent Chester Beatty Collections and make sure you visit their garden at the top of the building for another view of the Castle.

For engagement and wedding shoots I suggest doing it in the morning when there are less people in the grounds. Group tours in the Castle usually start around 10 am.

What makes Dublin Castle so photogenic is the sheer variety of architectural backdrops packed into one location. The medieval Record Tower, the Georgian State Apartments, the elegant cobblestone Coach House yard — each area gives a completely different feel within a single session. Couples who visit often end up with a range of shots that look like they were taken across three different countries.

A typical engagement session at Dublin Castle runs about 90 minutes. We usually start in the Upper Yard near the main entrance where the light hits the stone facades beautifully in the morning, then move through the garden and down toward the Chester Beatty. If you want something more relaxed and casual, the Dubh Linn Garden at the back of the castle complex is quieter and often overlooked by tourists — which means we almost always have it to ourselves.

Dublin Castle also works beautifully for family portrait sessions and solo travel photography. If you are visiting Dublin from abroad and want a portrait session that captures something truly Irish, this is one of my top recommendations. The castle is free to enter, centrally located, and delivers a sense of history that you simply cannot fake in a studio.
