Dublin is an increasingly popular honeymoon destination — and it's easy to see why. It's a city that manages to feel both vibrant and intimate, with enough culture, scenery, and good restaurants to fill a week without any effort. Add in the wild coastline of Howth and the rolling hills of Wicklow, and you've got a backdrop that most couples only dream about.

I'm Tristan, a Dublin-based travel lifestyle photographer. I've photographed honeymoon couples from all over the world — the US, Australia, Japan, Brazil, Canada — exploring Dublin and falling in love with it all over again. In this post I want to share what makes a honeymoon photoshoot in Dublin work, what to expect, and how to make sure your gallery actually reflects the trip you had.

Why Dublin for Your Honeymoon Photoshoot?

There's something about Dublin that photographs beautifully in ways people don't always expect. The Georgian architecture and colourful doors of Merrion Square. The old stone harbour in Howth with the light bouncing off the water. The moody, dramatic cliffs on the peninsula at sunrise. The city's lanes and alleys that look like something from a film set.

Unlike Paris or Rome, where every photographer is competing for the same shot in front of the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum, Dublin gives you room to be original. I know spots that visitors never find on their own — and that's exactly where the best honeymoon images come from.

What Makes a Great Honeymoon Photoshoot

The couples who come away with images they love almost always have one thing in common: they stopped trying to pose and started just being together.

My job isn't to arrange you like furniture. It's to put you in beautiful places, give you enough direction to feel comfortable, and then step back while you're just yourselves. The best honeymoon images look like stolen moments — because they essentially are.

Choose a location that means something to you. If you're seafood lovers, Howth harbour is a better choice than a generic city street. If you love architecture, the Georgian squares of south Dublin. If you want drama, the Wicklow mountains. Tell me about yourselves and I'll suggest the right spot.

Give it enough time. The first 20 minutes of any shoot are slightly awkward. That's normal and that's fine. But it means a 30-minute session rarely gets to the good stuff. For honeymoon couples, I always recommend at least 90 minutes.

Forget the schedule, slightly. The best light in Dublin is the 45 minutes before sunset. If that means dinner at 9pm instead of 7pm, it's worth it.

Best Honeymoon Photoshoot Locations in Dublin

Howth

My most-requested location for honeymoon couples. A fishing village on a clifftop peninsula 30 minutes from the city centre. The cliff walk has views out over the Irish Sea, with the Wicklow Mountains on the southern horizon. The harbour is completely different — colourful, busy, full of texture. I often do a single session that covers both.

Merrion Square and Georgian Dublin

The classic Dublin backdrop — rows of Georgian townhouses with their famously colourful front doors, wide leafy squares, ironwork railings. Best shot in early morning when the streets are empty and the light is soft and directional.

The Wicklow Mountains

An hour from Dublin, a world away. If you're spending a few days in Ireland and want images with real landscape drama — wide open valleys, heather moorland, mountain light — I offer half-day sessions that include Wicklow travel.

Dublin City Lanes

Temple Bar is the famous one, but the lanes and passages around Grafton Street have a character all their own. Colourful shopfronts, cobblestones, the kind of streets that make you feel like you're in an old film.

When to Book Your Honeymoon Photoshoot in Dublin

Book before you travel. Summer and autumn weekends fill up months in advance. If you know your travel dates, lock in your session as early as you can.

Evening sessions are worth the wait. The golden hour in Dublin in summer can be as late as 9:30pm. Sessions that start at 7:30 or 8pm catch the most beautiful light of the day.

Allow flexibility in your itinerary. Weather in Dublin is changeable. I'll always try to work with it — some of the most atmospheric honeymoon images I've shot have been in soft Irish drizzle — but for very important sessions, a backup date in your schedule gives you peace of mind.
